Important Dates 2024


Monday, February 5, 2024. County elections officials begin mailing each registered voter a vote-by-mail ballot no later than today.


February 20, 2024. Deadline to Register to Vote. This is the deadline to register to vote in California and receive a vote-by-mail ballot for the March Presidential Primary. You can still register and vote after this date, but you will need to register using conditional (same day) voter registration. March 5, 2024. Presidential Primary in California. Polls close at 8pm. Your VBM ballot must be postmarked by today or dropped off in a ballot dropbox by 8pm. Or you can vote at a vote center by 8pm (if you are in line by 8pm, you can still vote).

September 19, 2023. National Voter Registration Day 2023. Join SJSU Votes for NVRD at the SJSU Votes Festival on campus. Stay tuned for more details! October 23, 2023 Deadline to Register to Vote and Receive a Vote by Mail (VBM) Ballot for the November 7th Special Election. You can still register and vote after this date, but you will need to register using conditional (same day) voter registration.

November 7, 2023. Special Election in Santa Clara County. There is a San José-Evergreeen, Trustee Area 7 Community College District Special Election. Please see SCC Registrar Special Election Information.

September 20, 2022. National Voter Registration Day 2022. Celebrate NVRD with SJSU Votes! See our event calendar for information about the SJSU Votes Festival. National Voter Registration Day is one of the civic holidays celebrated by SJSU Votes. Get #VoteReady!


October 3-7, 2022. National Voter Education Week 2022. Celebrate this civic holiday with SJSU Votes! and other campus organizations. We’ll add events to our schedule soon. National Voter Education Week is a nonpartisan effort aimed at providing information to voters. “National Voter Education Week (NVEW) helps voters bridge the gap between registering to vote and actually casting a ballot. During this week of interactive education, voters have the opportunity to find their polling location, understand their ballot, make a plan to vote in person or remotely, and more. NVEW strives to help voters overcome common barriers to become confident voters and ambassadors of voting in their own communities for every election” (votereducationweek.org). #VOTEREADY


October 10, 2022. Vote-by Mail Ballots are mailed. Your California county elections office will begin mailing vote-by-mail ballots today. You may also vote in person at your county elections office or drop off your vote-by-mail ballot at a secure drop box, beginning today.

Several secure drop boxes will be located near SJSU including:

  1. San Jose City Hall, outside @ E. Santa Clara St. & S. 4th St.

  2. SJSU, outside of Dudley Moorhead Hall

  3. SJSU, outside of the Martin Luther King Jr. Library

  4. San Jose State University, outside of the Campus Villages

You may drop off your vote-by-mail ballot at a secure drop box 24 hours a day Oct 10-Nov 8 (8pm).

Ballots will be collected from secure drop boxes October 10 – October 21, 2022: Monday, Wednesday, and Friday​​ AND October 24 – November 8, 2022: Daily.


October 24, 2022. Deadline to Register to Vote. The deadline to register to vote in California and receive a vote-by-mail ballot is October 24, 2022. You can still register and vote after this date, but you will need to register using conditional (same day) voter registration. SJSU Votes! encourages you to register by October 24th for the midterm election so you can avoid potentially waiting in line at a voting location. October 28, 2022. Vote Early Day. Learn about your voting early options and cast your ballot on Vote Early Day, another important civic holiday! Mail your vote-by-mail ballot today if you have not already done so. Drop it in the mail (postage is already paid), drop it in a secure drop box, or bring to a county elections office today!

October 29, 2022. 11-Day Vote Centers Open in Santa Clara County. You can also bring your vote-by-mail ballot to an 11-day vote center, beginning October 29, 2022. Santa Clara County residents, click here to find vote centers near you. Drop off your ballot, vote in person, register to vote using conditional registration, and vote using electronic voting system with accessible features, including touchscreen and audio at a vote center! Language assistance is also available.

The Vote Center at SJSU is open. The vote center is located in the SJSU Event Center, Room 1035. The vote center is open October 29th-November 7th 9am-5pm and on Election Day, November 8th 7am-8pm.


November 3, 2022. 4-Day Vote Centers Open in Santa Clara County. You can bring your vote-by-mail ballot to an 4-day vote center, beginning November 3, 2022. November 7, 2022. Election Hero Day. SJSU Votes! celebrates our election workers on Election Hero Day. Join us in recognizing all of the amazing people helping to ensure we have free and fair elections. Thank you to the amazing administration and staff at the Santa Clara County Registrar of Voters’ Office, to administration and staff at all elections offices in California and in the U.S., to administration and staff at the California Secretary of State’s Office, and to election workers in every voting location in California and in the rest of the nation. We are grateful for your dedication and hard work! Thank you also to you the voter!


November 8, 2022. Election Day. Return your vote-by-mail ballot by mail, postmarked by today. It must be received by November 15, 2022. Or drop off your vote-by-mail ballot in a secure ballot drop box or a county elections office or voting location by 8pm today.
